During an onsite call I ran into an issue on a Windows 2019 Standard server where I got this error: “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item” when I go to Open Network & Internet settings and select Change adapter options.
I can however open control panel and select “Network and Sharing Center” and then “Change adapter options” and I don’t get the error. I am using the domain administrator account.
This issue can be bypassed by editing Security Policy:
run secpol.msc
Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options
Enable User Account Control
Then reboot the affected server and test, works like a charm!
